Smiles were in abundance under the shining sun, which eventually found its way between cracks in the clouds to grace the venue of the Jon Olsson Invitational. Champagne in hand, those in the Betsafe VIP tent stood above a crowd of thousands of enthusiasts who got the show they dreamed of. It was flawless in every way and no one walked away unhappy.
The view from the balcony was impeccable. Alongside friends – both old and new – we cheered, gasped and stood in awe at the show while sharing stories of the winter and reminiscing on times passed. The day was fantastic, truly one to remember for a lifetime.
And as the sun set and the lights came on, the cold never seemed to set in to bother the warmth of the atmosphere we had created. The finals were underway in both the Head Big Air and the Betsafe Alpine Challenge. The nerves and anxiety implied in competitive skiing must have missed us because – judging from the smiles on the athletes’ faces – the cheerful mood of the event hadn’t escaped them either.
It was the last hurrah of a season full of stressful races and tense competition; this was their opportunity to just do what they loved with the people they love in front of thousands of adoring fans. The event was driven by pure unadulterated fun, a sentiment felt by all in Åre.
Loud cheers for epic crowd-pleasing tricks from the big air guys filled the stadium with electricity while the racers stretched fiercely for the finish line skidding to a stop with arms out awaiting their opponents with no ill-will. The evening was to be shared, and it was contagious; one smile from the far end of the stadium would be felt all the way on the other end, passing through everyone along the way.
As we clinked glasses to the evening, we welcomed a night full of partying that no one could forget…
